‘ROUINE’ was designed in 1957 by Smith Tracey Lyon & Brock on an extensive treed allotment in the coveted ‘Windy Hill’ locale in Essendon. The clients were a local family that were willing to explore the modern mid-century housing designs with high-end detailing, breezy courtyards and abundance of natural light. Set well back from the street with an established garden approach, the L-shaped plan took advantage of the garden outlook from all rooms and incorporated a central light-filled courtyard that linked the separate living and bedroom wings. Parquetry flooring, fluted timber wall panelling, elegantly proportioned window elevations and fenestrated brickwork detailing that were incorporated into the original design after lengthy inspections and workshops with the clients are still intact today. This long established house was offered for the first time in near original condition in 2017 and recently sold for $3,080,000….a tribute to its unique family residence design that has stood the test of time.
