The STEAM Centre at Kolbe College is a cornerstone of a vibrant campus dedicated to Catholic education, designed to enrich both the learning environment and the wider Greenvale community. As part of a collective of purpose-built facilities, the new STEAM Centre establishes a hub of excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics. It celebrates innovation in education both inwardly—through dynamic, future-focused learning—and outwardly, by embodying the values of Catholic identity. The STEAM Centre strengthens Kolbe’s role as a leader in educational practice and community engagement.
The eleven learning spaces and staff spaces are visible, accessible, and all open inwards towards the central collaborative zone, creating a strong sense of community belonging and inclusion. The learning environment is highly flexible and adaptable, enabling a variety of settings to adjust to the diverse STEAM activities, whilst allowing students to create their learning environment to best support their personal academic endeavours. The learning spaces can be individualised or open to establish ‘super’ labs and studios to accommodate small to large groupings. The ground floor spaces extend the learning environment outdoors to further create unique educational opportunities.
The central tiered seating connects the learning community at the heart of the building. This element creates the collaborative space encouraging gathering and togetherness with the opportunity for learning and prayer, reinforced using restrained materials, with elements of warmth and graphic imprints strengthening the respectful link to educational and faith values of the College, with a sense of transcendental importance.
The oculus and halo of light at the communal heart of the building over the tiered seating, is an affirming connection of the Centre’s learning community providing vertical connection to nature and wonder.
“This new facility provides students with access to dynamic and flexible environments that redefines and reimagines learning in STEAM. With a focus on sustainability, collaboration, enterprise skills and creativity, the STEAM Centre provides a landscape for students to break pre-existing boundaries and further their discovery of self. Virtual reality, green screens, outdoor learning environments and environmentally sustainable features are just some of the many components that are integrated into this state-of-the-art facility.”
